To say the job market and economy are tough right now is an understatement. Everything is expensive, too many people are underpaid for the work they’re doing, AI has disrupted how employers value human work as well as every process this technology gets shoved into, and we all feel like rats trapped in a shoe on fire floating in the ocean. I know how much it sucks being unemployed or underemployed, feeling trapped in a job situation where you can’t get ahead.
That leaves many jobseekers in a catch-22: you want a better job most likely to have better pay because you might be struggling, but you need help to find that better job and help costs money you might not already have.
As part of Start 2 Continue’s commitment to helping others, I want to offer something that can make a difference, especially if you feel like you’re not getting the support or help you need searching for jobs: behold, our pay-what-you-want resume writing and editing service.
I have written and edited over 150 resumes throughout my career, not just for the sake of human readability, but also formatting tricks to keep your resume from getting auto-sorted by algorithms and AI (mind you, I can’t guarantee this because the algos are always changing, but I do know how to improve your chances of reaching a person and catching their attention).
Whether you need a brand new resume, help cleaning up an old one, or just some pointers and feedback on how to clean your current one up or how to apply your skills, whatever you need, I want to offer it.
Pay-what-you-want means exactly that.
But I don’t want anyone who needs or asks for help to feel ashamed. Sometimes a little bit of help is all we need and can make the difference. You are not a burden for asking; despite the stress and feeling overwhelmed, you’re still deserving of peace, financial stability, and employment that feels fulfilling while also paying the bills and then some.
While you might not worry about me knowing your personal details if you already know me, it might feel sketchy to share information with someone you don’t know through the Internet. Though I still need a way to contact and talk with you (we can do this through email or Discord), I can still work with employment, education history, skills, etc. and live things like phone numbers, cities, and names as placeholders for you to fill in on your end. If I use any fancy fonts, I find them all through Google Fonts which are open and free to use and will include links so you can use them as well (in case Google Docs or Microsoft Word doesn’t already have them available on your end).
If this is of interest, just reach out with the following:
Once we get started, I might have a few questions for you to clarify details. Normally when I edit resumes, we do 2-3 passbacks to make sure everything looks good and I got the details right.
With that in mind, please give me a week or two to edit them (though I can go a lot quicker if it’s just proofreading an existing resume that doesn’t need much help). I’ll give you both a PDF (for submission) and either a Word or Google Doc (for editing) once we’re done.
And even if you’re just curious or want to help others, message me through the links above.
Otherwise, if you know someone who might need help or want to signal boost, feel free to copy/paste/share this page wherever.
Why should I use your services when I can just use AI?
For one, if you want this service to be, it’s free, which even most AI models require some sort of monthly fee. Still, if you don’t already know how to write a good resume, how to format it to be both readable for human reviewers and relevant for filtering algorithms, and how to troubleshoot why you’re struggling to find work, AI isn’t going to help you much. Because I have experience as an interviewer and have helped clients in their hiring processes as well as experience writing resumes and cover letters, I know what questions to ask you and how to fix problems most people don’t find.
Plus, this is your story. It deserves care and respect. If you want a product, throw it through your favorite LLM; but if you want something you feel proud of and that resonates with your interviewers, I’m happy to help.
As an aside: because I work with a lot of employers and freelancers across the United States, I might be able to help you network or ask people who work in your target industries for advice or opportunities for you. The job search game is often about who you know and I know many people and if I like and trust you, I’ll see what I can do to potentially introduce you or at least point you in better directions that fit your goals.
Does this service include cover letters?
Yes. If you need a cover letter, I’ll draft one and give you a template to write others on your own as well as pointers on how to improve your cover letter game.
I know this is pay-what-you-want, but what would the average cost of these services be if I wanted to pay for them?
For general resumes in entry- or intermediate-level positions, I used to charge $60. For executive positions like VPs and c-suite, I’d charge $110. For cover letters, I’d write one and create a template for you to use for future applications at $30-40.
But again, whatever you feel is fair or can afford to pay is the cost. While $60 is reasonable for a resume, if you’re struggling and feel stuck, it’s better to spend that $60 on groceries and fuel (and still get a resume you can leverage in your job hunt).
How do I know your service is valuable if you’re just giving it away for free?
Check out the growing list of testimonials below if you want to get a feel for the value I provide, not just in the resumes but how they’re used and the effect they have on their owners. Much like how getting your car washed is a weird boost of confidence, polishing up your resume into something you’re genuinely proud of has a similar effect.
While I have my own bottom lines to consider (ya boy has to eat and pay rent too), I deeply believe that there are certain things we ought to do to serve other people. For me, it’s using my talents in building people up and telling their stories to help them find fulfillment in their own work; and if you’re stuck, you need help, and don’t have access to quality support because of money (the very problem you’re trying to solve), I feel it is my moral obligation to help you this way.
Besides, it’s free. If you hate the resume writing and edits I did for you, you’re not out anything but a little bit of your time. But if you love it and it’s useful, great. We solved a problem together and if you feel that, once you’re more financially stable or want to, it’s worth paying back or forward later, that’s your call.
I just want to help and with how isolating and chaotic the world feels, this is my way of reminding others that they’re not so alone after all and I have the skills to back what I say.
How are you able to afford to do this?
I make most of my money through coaching and consulting small businesses as well as through optional member subscriptions in Start 2 Continue’s community Discord. And while I’ve had people take me up on the free part of this offer, there are others who insist on paying something for the help or others still who pay it forward by essentially buying resumes outright to cover those who need help for free.
What if I need more help than just my resume?
Depends on the kind of help that you need. Reach out to me via email or Discord (I go by Metz in there) and we can talk. My personal and professional services start at $50/month and scale based on what you need help with and what you want to spend. I help with everything from starting businesses, scaling them, monetizing content creation, troubleshooting tons of different problems. I’m kind of a Swiss army knife that way and for what I don’t know, I have a few freelancers I’m happy to introduce you, keeping your needs in mind.
Easiest explanation: you tell me about your problems and frustrations and I’ll help you find a way to make it all work. You can learn more on the page.
I’m over working as an employee in someone else’s system. Can you help me start my own business or freelancing career?
You betcha. I offer coaching and consulting services for all kinds of professionals, whether you want to start your own digital or brick-and-mortar business, freelancing career or agency, or help you become a professional content creator. You tell me your goals and I’ll either teach you, work with you, or do some of the work for you. I start at $50/month and scale depending on what you need and what budget you want to dedicate to this kinda work.
You can learn more about me, what I do, and how and why I do it on the page.
